Mammoth
Ivory
The
remains of the Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus Primigenius),
extinct for over 10,000 years, are buried throughout
Alaska in great abundance. Mammoth Ivory has only
been partially mineralized since it has been preserved
in permafrost and is useful in jewelry, scrimshaw,
and carving.
Ivory
is collected by Alaskan Natives as a result of
natural erosion, or can be a byproduct from the
gold mining industry.
Mammoth
Ivory color varies from antique white to dark brown
and blue.
